DOCOMO PACIFIC will launch its fifth-generation, or 5G, wireless broadband service test lab in early 2019 on Guam.

The company's parent NTT DOCOMO operates 5G open labs in Tokyo and Osaka and will open a third in Okinawa, Japan, this month.

Ahead of the 5G commercial service launch for business and residential customers, DOCOMO PACIFIC's sole shareholder, Tokyo-based NTT DOCOMO, will begin operating the DOCOMO 5G Open Lab Guam as a 5G verification center at its Tamuning headquarters in early 2019.

The company's 5G open lab on Guam will be the company's fourth verification center and its first lab outside of Japan.

Fifth-generation wireless broadband service is the latest iteration of cellular technology engineered to greatly increase the speed and responsiveness of wireless networks.

Bringing ultra-high speeds, and the ability to connect a massive number of devices, 5G is an emerging technology that will transform "augmented and virtual reality" when it comes to gaming, education, manufacturing, telemedicine and beyond, the company stated.

"We are proud to be at the forefront of new technologies like 5G that help revolutionize the way we communicate and connect with our physical, virtual, and social worlds," stated Roderick Boss, president and CEO of DOCOMO PACIFIC. "While each new generation of wireless technology has offered great benefits to customers, 5G is the wave of the future and will offer higher speeds than ever before, shorter delays and increased connectivity. We're excited our parent company NTT DOCOMO wants Guam to experience the future of 5G first."

The 5G open lab will allow worldwide partners including Guam to access the lab and its 5G base/mobile stations and equipment, along with the latest 5G information, test environments, and opportunities for partner workshops through the DOCOMO 5G Open Partner Program with more than 1,900 partners. DOCOMO PACIFIC will continue collaborating with startups, enterprises and other partners from various industries to co-create innovative 5G services globally, the company stated.
