The Kundalini Soulcation Retreat will be offered by Synergy Wellness next weekend on Sept. 7 and 8 at the Ritidian Eco Beach Resort.

Synergy Studios and Synergy Wellness founder Clare Calvo said certified Kundalini instructor Inanna Bantu will lead the yoga classes.

As a yoga instructor herself, Calvo has held retreats in the past but said, “This will be the first one where someone from off island will be coming to facilitate.”

For those not familiar with the practice, Calvo said Kundalini Yoga is considered the “yoga of awareness.”

Its history dates back thousands of years and was brought the West in the 1960s.

The practice focuses on the awakening and release of energy, she said.

“It’s about balancing that energy through the different systems of the body and keeping the chakras balanced and open," Calvo said.

Kundalini, according to various yoga websites, means “coiled snake" in Sanskrit. In early Eastern religion, it was believed that people are born with an energy, divine in nature, and the energy sits at the base of the spine. The practice of Kundalini helps individuals “uncoil the snake,” allowing practitioners to tap into this energy. According to Gaia, Kundalini Yoga is a blend of three other forms of yoga – Bhakti, the yogic practice of devotion and chanting; Raja yoga, the practice of mental and physical control; and Shakti, for the expression of power and energy.

Calvo said at Ritidian Beach Resort, participants can enjoy the sunshine and the ocean breeze as they go through group personal instruction in Kundalini Yoga, EmPOWER Yoga, Ecstatic Dance and Authentic Uninhibited Movement. During the retreat, participants also will be able to choose a detox liquid cleanse or plant-based nutrition provided by Fu’una Cultures.

Calvo said the purpose of offering the retreat is to provide a chance to practice self-care.

“We have to take care of ourselves and each other and our island,” she said.
