At least 16 of Guam’s sons and a daughter have died fighting the war on terrorism, mostly in Afghanistan and Iraq, over the past decade.

Today, Memorial Day, we remember and reflect on the ultimate sacrifice they gave.

We also thank their families for their sacrifices.

We can only hope that the surviving loved ones may find comfort in the thought that the legacy our Guam fallen heroes left behind will continue to inspire us to become better citizens of our island and our nation.

• Army Sgt. Joshua A. Lukeala, 23, died Jun 7, 2010, in Afghanistan.

• Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Anthony M. Carbullido, 25, died Aug. 8, 2008, in Afghanistan.

• Army Spc. Brian S. Leon Guerrero, 34, died July 10, 2008, in Afghanistan.

• Army Spc. Samson A. Mora, 28, died July 10, 2008, in Afghanistan.

• Army Staff Sgt. Joseph D. Gamboa, 34, died March 25, 2008, in Iraq.

• Army Maj. Henry S. Ofeciar, 37, died Aug. 27, 2007, in Afghanistan.

• Army Sgt. Iosiwo Uruo, 27, died May 24, 2007, in Iraq.

• Army Pfc. John D. Flores, 21, died May 3, 2007, in Baghdad.

• Army Sgt. Gregory D. Fejeran, 28, died March 5, 2007, in Ethiopia.

• Army Sgt. Christopher J.C. Fernandez, 28, died March 5, 2007, in Ethiopia.

• Army Sgt. Jesse J.J. Castro, 22, died Dec. 6, 2006, in Iraq.

• Army Pfc. Kasper A. Dudkiewicz, 22, died Jan. 15, 2006, in Iraq.

• Army Spc. Richard Junior D. Naputi, 24, died Dec. 20, 2005, in Iraq.

• Marine Cpl. Jaygee Meluat, 24, died Sept. 13, 2004, in Iraq.
