Sisters win K-pop dance contest

KOREAN FESTIVAL: After the success of the inaugural Korean Festival in September 2018, the second annual Korean Festival was held Sept. 28 at Gov. Joseph Flores (Ypao Beach) Park in Tumon. A new addition this year was the K-pop dance contest, which consisted of a video audition process and a final competition on the festival night. The winners were 19-year-old Araya, left, and 14-year-old Shawnee Marquez, a sister duo from Guam Community College and Tiyan High School. Having practiced for only two weeks, the Barrigada residents were nervous to be on stage with other groups. These self-taught dancers first got into K-pop when a video of BTS caught their attention. Their victory came as a surprise to them, as they were largely outnumbered by other groups, but the Marquez sisters were beyond happy when receiving their award. Sandra Han/The Scoop
