Providing an outlet for young musicians has been one of the missions of the John F. Kennedy High School Vivace Program. Vivace is an advanced level choir program for aspiring JFKHS musicians. It has provided knowledge, family, and a home for students with a desire to learn music for the past 17 years.
“Vivace’s mission is to continue to build a strong choral tradition at JFK and on our island, to grow in excellence and to contribute in keeping music alive in our public schools," said Amadeo Nierva, a JFKHS senior and current president of Vivace.
Nierva is grateful for the opportunity to uphold the mission of the program that allows them to share their gift of music and spread their love for singing with the community.
The group has placed first in competitions including the GDOE Battle of the Bands and Guam Chamber of Commerce Song Festival. Although competition isn't their main focus, they do provide a platform to reinforce the choral tradition in our island.
Family of music
At Vivace, students found family in each other through a shared love for music, said JFKHS junior Marina Babauta.
“You’re able to really bring the music to life and once you bring the music to life you also form relationships with other people through music. You just become family,” Babauta said.
The program surely teaches music but it requires that students practice strong work ethic, students said.
Joining Vivace is a commitment that shouldn’t be taken lightly, Babauta said. The students make that commitment the moment they join the program.
“I’ve witnessed many grow and develop, not only musically but in many other aspects. It’s rewarding to see among the musicians an elevated sense of achievement when the music comes together," said Ailene Sablan, Vivace adviser. "That’s why I love doing what I do. Seeing the members come together, learning and growing together and providing opportunities to share their talent and passion with their friends, family, their school and the community.”
Sablan works to foster an environment that values respect, commitment, responsibility, humility, self-awareness and consideration for others. These are the things that set Vivace members closer to their goals.
For students interested in joining, freshmen, sophomores and juniors are eligible to audition. The auditions are usually held during the second semester of the school year so the club will be making announcements soon.
The number of available slots available for new members varies each year, based on the number of seniors graduating.
