Hagibis strengthens as it moves closer to Marianas region

Tropical Storm Hagibis continues to strengthen as it makes its way westward towards the Mariana islands.

A Typhoon Watch is currently in effect for Alamagan Island, while a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the rest of the CNMI, including Rota, Tinian, Saipan, Pagan and Agrihan, according to the National Weather Service Tiyan, Guam office. Residents of these islands can expect changes to these watches as we will likely upgrade islands to warnings on Sunday afternoon.

There currently are no watches or warnings for Guam.

"Keep in mind, a typhoon watch means typhoon conditions, including destructive winds of 74 mph or more, are possible within 48 hours, or around Monday evening with Hagibis; a tropical storm watch means tropical storm conditions, including damaging winds of 39 mph or more, are possible within 48 hours, also around Monday afternoon with this storm," meteorologists stated in an NWS press release.

Officials urge Guamanians to take precautions as the island will likely see heavy rain showers from associated thunderstorms.
