A woman accused of leaving her 8-year-old stepchild alone at the San Jose Mart in Maite in July pleaded not guilty to the charges filed against her in the Superior Court of Guam.
Chelsea Lynn Charfauros Taitano, 28, was charged with child abuse as a misdemeanor.
Taitano, who is represented by attorney Nicole Cruz, appeared before Magistrate Judge Jonathan Quan on Wednesday to be arraigned.
She waived her rights to a speedy trial and is scheduled to appear back in court on Sept. 26.
According to court documents, a witness told police she saw the suspect go into the store with a baby in a carrier and a boy following her.
She then used the phone and left, leaving the boy at the store.
Initially said she didn’t mean to leave her stepson
A witness approached the boy who then told the witness his stepmom had dropped off his dad at a game room before they went to the store, documents state.
The witness stayed with the boy for about an hour before calling police.
The boy cried when he spoke to the police because he didn’t know where his family had gone, documents state.
Taitano was later spotted returning to the store. She told authorities that she didn’t mean to leave her stepson.
She later admitted to police that she’d left the boy in the store so she could go spend time with family without having to be questioned about whose kid he was, documents state. She claimed she’d lost track of time before she headed back to the store.
