A 3-year-old boy who went missing in his Saipan home on Monday was found dead in a septic tank, authorities confirmed.
Police investigation revealed that the tank was covered with a piece of plywood, but the child must have fallen in when the child walked over the plywood, according to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Public Safety.
Saipan police received a 911 call at 4:49 p.m. Monday about the child who was found unresponsive in the village of San Roque.
Around 4:52 p.m., officers who were nearby arrived at the scene. An officer began conducting CPR until medics arrived. Medics took over and transported the child from the scene to the Saipan hospital.
A doctor subsequently pronounced the 3-year-old dead due to drowning.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was playing outside his family home when family members noticed that the victim was nowhere in sight. Family members conducted a search around the home until one family member discovered the child submerged underwater in a septic tank, according to the CNMI DPS.
This case remains under investigation.
