A 27-year-old man is behind bars and a 17-year-old is in custody at the Department of Youth Affairs. Both face numerous charges related to thefts of two cars that became part of early morning car chases.

Around 4 a.m. Sunday, an officer saw a stolen Kia Optima on Route 10, Vietnam Veterans Highway, in Mangilao going toward Route 16 in Barrigada and attempted a traffic stop. The operator of the Kia refused to comply and a chase ensued.

On Route 4, Chalan Kanton Tasi, in Chalan Pago, the driver jumped out of the Kia and got into a waiting Honda Civic. A second pursuit ensued. The Honda Civic was driving toward Sinajana. The driver lost control at Fonte Drive in Agana Heights and crashed into a police car.

The two were arrested and brought to the Hagåtña Precinct Command. The Kia was reported stolen from Tamuning on May 13. The Honda Civic had been reported stolen from Hagåtña on June 9. GPD did not identify which brother was driving which car.

The teen was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, conspiracy, guilt established by complicity, no driver’s license, curfew violation and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance. This case was sent to the Office of the Attorney General.
