For the second consecutive season, Father Duenas Memorial School Friars’ Kein Artero has been nominated Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam All-Island offensive MVP.
With more than 1,000 all-purpose yards and 19 touchdowns, his nomination may have been the IIAAG’s easiest decisions all season.
Artero, the league’s most explosive running back and special teams return man, lead the four-time defending champion Friars to their 46th straight win.
The No. 1-seeded Friars, atop the IIAAG standings at 6-0, received a first-round bye in the playoffs.
Noah Quichocho, a George Washington High School Geckos’ linebacker, received the nod from the league as its defensive MVP.
Quichocho led the Geckos to a 5-1 regular-season record and will lead the No. 2 seeded Geckos into the playoffs.
The Geckos, who finished the 2018 season with a double-overtime loss in the championship game to the Friars, will begin their 2019 postseason quest against the No. 7-seeded Southern High School Dolphins at 7 p.m. Friday, at GW field in Mangilao.
In other first-round playoff action, the No. 5-seeded John F. Kennedy High School Islanders will take on the No. 4-seeded Simon Sanchez High School Sharks 7 p.m. Friday, at Okkodo High School in Dededo.
On Saturday, the No. 3-seeded Guam High School Panthers will play No. 6-seeded Tiyan High School Titans in Round 1 at 7 p.m., at Guam High in Agana Heights.
The Guam Daily Post congratulates all of All-Island nominees and wishes good luck to all in the playoffs.
