The Guam Youth Basketball Association kicked off its 15th season Saturday, with 88 teams featuring nearly 800 athletes in nine divisions. The 2019 GYBA Drug-Free Summer Basketball League rocked the Harmon Sports Complex and Astumbo gym as hundreds of fans packed the gyms throughout the day to watch young hoopsters battle it out for court supremacy.

The U8 divisions are played without records or scores kept to promote fun and fundamentals over winning games.


Dededo Yellow Jackets Yellow 29, Island Wolves Black 8: Zander Castro dropped 11 points for the win, while the Wolves' Taurehn Arjona scored 6 points.

• Mavericks 14, Agat Stars 12 (OT): The Mavericks’ Tomas Duenas scored 8 points, and Cam Jude Tudela scored 4 points to power the Stars. Time ended with teams locked at 10 apiece. The Mavericks turned to Duenas, who hit two jumpers to give them the win.

• Wolves Blue 29, Crusaders 8: The Wolves' Avyn Pangelinan scored 10 points in the double-digit victory. The Crusaders' Hosea Gogue had 6 points in the loss.


Elite Black 28, DYJ Yellow 21: Elite Rian Kamai led the Elite Black with 9 points.

Crusaders Edge 22, Imperials 16: Aiden Uncangco scored 8 points to power the Edge. Imperials' Nheejo Navarro kept things close, knocking back 14 in the loss.

Elite Gold 43, Wolves Black 24: Noah Hernandez lit up the score board for Elite Gold with 22 points to counter the 11 points from the Wolves’ John Terson.


Mavericks 24, DYJ White 8: Peter Maulolo dropped 6 points to lead the Mavs, while Omar Henser had 3 points in the DYJ loss.

Crusaders Chrome 19, Wolves Blue 14: The Crusaders' Aubrey Quichocho scored 5 points, while the Wolves' Jazlene Deocompo scored 7 points in the loss.


Imperials White 44, Team STC Pink 25: Jeffrey Labanza led the Imperials with a game-high 16 points. Tyler Meredeth scored 11 for Team STC.

Elite Gold 54, Crusaders 22: Dillin Dela Cruz led the way for Elite with 11 points. Gabrrielle Cabarles netted 8 points for the Crusaders.

Mavericks 35, Team STC Black 19: Tyler Concepcion pumped in a game-high 18 points for the Mavericks, while Nic Espinol hit 11 points for Team STC.

Malesso 39, Island Wolves Black 37: Malesso’s Tyler Cruz and Ben Topasna combined for the winners. Killey Cruz scored 11 points for the Island Wolves.

Island Wolves Blue 50, Imperials Gold 26: Josiah Quintanilla dropped 13 points for the Island Wolves. The Imperials' Charles Pascua hit for 10 in the loss.

Elite Black 35, DYJ 26: Tammarion Henderson led a balanced Elite team with 7 points. The Yellow Jackets' Francis Borja had 4 points in the loss.

U18 Boys

Yellow Jackets 59, Imperials Gold 24: Jon Michael Lorena sizzled in 17 points to lead the Yellow Jackets. Nico Bonita netted 9 points for the Imperials.

Sharks 23, Eagles 16: John Aquino hit 4 points to lead the Sharks. Wes Keith finished with a game-high 8 points in the losing effort.

Warriors 55, South United 22: The Warriors' Brandon Miranda had the hot hand with 15 points. Ortega LV John scored 5 points for South United.

Action continues Wednesday in U18 division at the Guam Sports Complex.
