The island’s top and aspiring track athletes will get an opportunity to prove their mettle this weekend at the national championships. The Guam Track and Field Association will be holding its annual meet on June 15, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Guam High School Track in Agana Heights.

Three of the island’s last four Olympians – Regine Tugade, Derek Mandell and Josh Ilustre – will be on hand doing what they do best. For Mandell and Tugade, this should be their last official competition before heading out to the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa next month.

The event, which will draw more than its share of medalists, is open to the public, with winners of each event being crowned the Guam National Champion.

“GTFA encourages all athletes to compete in the national championship meet,” says Mandel, who is the organization’s president. “We are also excited for our National Team athletes to compete, as they prepare for the upcoming Oceania area championships and Pacific Games this summer.”

Running events range from 100m to 5000m. Champions will also be crowned in the relays, hurdling and field events. Check out GTFA’s official Facebook page for a complete list of events and registration information. Registration ends today at 11:59 p.m. for all those interested in competing.
