The University of Guam Tritons and the Harper Valley Kennel Bulldogs defeated their respective opponents Sunday afternoon to advance to the championship match in the Triton Men's Basketball League, which will be held Feb. 28 at the UOG Calvo Field House.

The Tritons played their best game of the season, upsetting the second-seeded MacTech Nerds 89-84.

The Nerds opened up the game with three technical fouls because of uniform violations, allowing the Tritons to take the early lead. The two teams seesawed back and forth with the Nerds holding a 20-19 lead at the end of the first quarter and the Tritons holding a 46-45 edge at the half.

In the third, the Tritons earned a little bit of breathing space with a four-point lead and stubbornly refused to relinquish it in the ferocious and final quarter of regulation.

Logan Hopkins hit 9-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to lead UOG in the final minutes of the game. The Tritons scored 14 of their total 18 points in the fourth period from the free-throw line as MacTech tried to stop the clock.

Hopkins for the Tritons and Chaz Barbour for the Nerds scored 33 points each to lead their teams. Barbour scored 26 of his points in the first half. Aljurrell Grape and Cloyd Rosas scored 15 points each for the Tritons as well.

UOG is now 3-4 in the Triton League while MacTech fell to 4-3 and ended their season.

Bulldogs vs. GCC

In the second game on Sunday afternoon, the top-seeded Bulldogs survived a scare from the team from Guam Community College, as the community college crew battled it out for nearly three quarters.

GCC led by 14 points (34-20) after the first quarter and held the lead until about halfway through the second period when the Bulldogs came back to lead 54-52 at halftime.

But GCC was not done, as they came back in the third quarter to take a 7-point lead midway through the period. A Bulldog timeout allowed them to come out after the timeout to press GCC in the final minutes of the period to take a 83-79 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs could not miss to open the final quarter, and GCC found itself down by 20 points early in the final 10 minutes of the game. GCC tried to come back but had too deep of a hole to dig out of and lost 120-109.

JP Cruz led the Bulldogs with 43 points and Ethan Alegre scored 44 for GCC.

The HVK Bulldogs are 7-0 in the league and GCC fell to 0-7.

UOG and the Bulldogs will play at 8 p.m. Feb. 21, after the 6 p.m. exhibition match between the Russian professional team, Vostok-65, and the Guam Select team. There is a fee for the 6 p.m. game, but the 8 p.m. game is free of charge.
