The University of Guam women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Venue SideKicks on Sunday afternoon at the Guam Football Association National Training Center in the GFA Amateur Women's League.
The first half was a defensive battle as neither team could score. While the Tritons were the aggressors offensively, the Sidekick defense held strong, batting away any shots on goal. The Sidekicks were playing 11 on 10 and kept their players on defense to limit the Triton offense.
The teams started the second half tied at 0-0 but at the 51-minute mark, UOG got the lucky bounce. A shot on goal bounced off the Sidekick goalie, hitting another Sidekick player for the own goal to give UOG the 1-0 lead.
The Sidekicks answered back, however, storming back a minute later with a high kick off the cross that ricocheted in for the 1-1 game.
The Tritons came out hungry with the game-tying goal as Mellanne Rasmussen nailed the winning shot to put the Tritons up 2-1. While the Sidekicks upped their offensive pressure, the UOG defense remained tight, playing stingy to stave off any hopes for a comeback.
The UOG win streak is now at 9 with a perfect 9-0-0 record. The Venue Sidekicks fall to 5-3-1 on the season.
